Denkai Animal Sanctuary, founded in May 2004 by Floss Blackburn, has emerged as a pivotal force in animal welfare, dedicated to aiding domestic animals in crisis throughout the United States and Mexico. Over the years, the sanctuary has garnered a strong reputation for its relentless dedication to rescuing lives and providing vital services to over 30,000 animals in need. This commitment to animal welfare has not only transformed the lives of countless creatures but has also inspired a community of supporters who share in the mission of compassion and care.
Initially established in Weld County, Colorado, Denkai expanded its reach by acquiring three facilities that collectively cover more than 640 acres. This vast expanse has enabled the sanctuary to engage in a variety of activities, including farming, conservation, and rescue operations for both large and small animals. Additionally, the sanctuary has prioritized affordable veterinary care, which has positioned it as the largest and most diverse animal welfare organization in the area, significantly benefiting the local community and enhancing the lives of many animals.
In response to the growing demand for services in Montezuma and La Plata County, Denkai's leadership made the strategic choice to relocate to Hesperus and Durango, Colorado. Each facility plays a crucial role in the rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming of both wild and domestic animals, including equines, farm animals, and pets. Furthermore, Denkai offers a comprehensive range of services, such as a full-service affordable veterinary center in Durango that doubles as an off-site adoption venue for rescued pets, a donation-based pet supply shop, and low-cost initiatives like pet food banks aimed at supporting low-income pet owners. These efforts reinforce Denkai's mission to foster healthy relationships between people and animals, ensuring that both can thrive together.
