Established in May 2004 by Floss Blackburn, Denkai Animal Sanctuary has carved out a significant niche in the realm of animal welfare, offering critical support to domestic animals in distress across the United States and Mexico. Over the years, the sanctuary has built a reputation for its unwavering commitment to saving lives and providing essential services to those in need.
In its early days, Denkai took root in Weld County, Colorado, acquiring three facilities that spanned over 640 acres. This expansive space allowed the organization to engage in farming, conservation efforts, and rescue operations for both large and small animals, as well as to offer affordable veterinary care. As a result, Denkai quickly emerged as the largest and most varied animal welfare organization in the region, making a profound impact on the local community.
Recognizing the need for enhanced services in Montezuma and Laplata County, Denkai's board made the strategic decision to relocate to Hesperus, Colorado and Cortez Colorado. Each unique facility aids in the rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming of wild and domestic equine, farm animals and pet animals. Other services offered include an adoption center for rescued pets, retail supplies, and low-cost programs aimed at assisting low-income pet owners, further solidifying Denkai's mission to promote healthy interactions between people and animals.
