Hudson, CO -
The scene was nothing short of a horror
movie. Multiple goats in various stages of death and dying, locked in
pens, no access to water, scorching heat and food nowhere to be found.
The survivors lived because they ate the fur off of each other and their
companions who had laid down and died right in front of their eyes.
Some were dead in shelters, others had laid down where they once stood.
Two horses, one locked in a 10x10 pen
slowly dying as we entered the property looked like canvas stretched
over bone. She was in organ failure and sadly was not saveable. The
second horse, a nine year old mare, was lucky, somehow she was able to
get out and eat hay that was sitting in the back of a pickup on the
property. Even with this, she still had no water and was also very thin.
Denkai assisted the Weld County Sheriff
in pulling the survivors from the property and housing them at our
Grover, CO facility. Of the numerous animals on site, thirteen goats
and one horse were saved. Their recovery was not easy and required 24/7
care for the first week. We had to slowly introduce them to food and
water in small quantities. We were feeding every couple hours. They all
made it. Every one of them recovered and today, you would never know by
looking at them what kind of nightmare they sustained.
There is a Federal Warrant out for the
owner of these animals. Due to this being an open case, we can not
disclose details, we ask that you respect this and allow the Sheriff's
Departments to do their jobs.
To view a complete photo album of the before and after recovery of this group of animals, please visit our website at www.denkaisanctuary.org.
Now they all need homes and we need to
get ready for the next influx of flood animals. Please consider helping
them out by adopting or fostering.
